Manchester United have missed out on signing Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao, with the club reportedly running out of time to secure the deal.
United's chase of Coentrao took a surprise turn late on Monday night, with the Spanish press claiming David Moyes was close to making a much-needed addition to his squad.
But the Press Association reports the two clubs were unable to come to an agreement before the deadline, adding to United's frustrations after failing to lure Leighton Baines from Everton.
Coentrao was tipped to provide back up for France international Patrice Evra, who could have been utilised in a more advanced role if the Spaniard had signed.
