Liverpool eye Shay Given, Tiago Ilori

Liverpool are chasing deals for Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given and Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

• Walsh: Reds' transfer hand may have been forced

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers is interested in bringing in Given, 37, as cover for first-choice Simon Mignolet, sources have told ESPN.

The Ireland international, who was linked with Championship side Doncaster earlier this summer, has been told that he can leave Villa Park.

Given did not travel with Villa on their pre-season tour of Germany, with boss Paul Lambert instead opting to take Brad Guzan and Jed Steer as his two ‘keepers.

Rodgers is keen to have an experienced back-up for Mignolet after allowing Pepe Reina to leave for Napoli on a season’s loan.

And the former Swansea boss is hoping to complete a deal for Given before the transfer window shuts at 23:00GMT on Monday.

Rodgers is also looking at strengthening his defence, and remains optimistic about the chances of signing 20-year-old centre-back Ilori.

Talks over a deal broke down in June as Liverpool and Sporting could not agree a fee, but a move could go through during the next few days. The Reds are hopeful of signing Ilori for around £6 million.

The club are also interested in Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho, who they could also sign before Monday's transfer deadline.

France international Sakho, 23, is understood to be a target for Roma as well.
