Vincent Kompany eyes quick comeback

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has allayed fears he faces a long spell on the sidelines by saying he hopes to be back soon.

The defender limped off in Monday’s 4-0 win over Newcastle with a suspected groin problem and manager Manuel Pellegrini said he believed the injury could be “serious”.

But the Belgium international, who missed two months of last season with a calf strain, wrote on Twitter that he is confident of making a rapid return to the City side.

The 27-year-old is set to be assessed by medics on Tuesday and Pellegrini said after the Newcastle game: “"I can’t say exactly what happened with him. The doctor will say but I think it is a serious injury, maybe for one or two weeks.”

City are short of central defenders at the moment with Matija Nastasic missing the Newcastle game with an ankle injury, though the young Serb has returned to training, and Kolo Toure having left the Etihad Stadium to join Liverpool.

The versatile Micah Richards revealed he has a hamstring injury so midfielder Javi Garcia took over from Kompany in the back four for the closing stages of the win against Newcastle.
