Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle's late double gave Dale Johnson an unexpected share of the spoils last weekend -- with champion Tommy Smyth thwarted at the death. It now means the Rest of the World have to win the final round of the season to avoid the wooden spoon.
But there is some incentive for Tommy -- if he wins this round he will score his highest-ever points tally in Showdown history.
Hoping to salvage pride for the ROTW before the summer break is George Dancy, who comes from Cape Carteret, in the US state of North Carolina.
George tells Showdown: "I'm 29, currently living in NC and I grew up in New Jersey. I started playing soccer when I was three years old and still play occasionally. I am a supporter of the Chelsea Football Club and the New York Red Bulls. My family is of English descent so I would love to beat the Irishman known as Tommy Smyth!"
For each round of matches we invite someone to represent the Rest of the World and take on ESPN FC TV's Tommy Smyth and ESPN FC journalist Dale Johnson in our predictions game.
Points are then awarded as follows:
- Three points for a correct result and scoreline
- One point for a correct result
After the weekend's scores are in and the Showdown result has been worked out, the winning pundit receives three points for their season's total. Should the challenger win, the total is added to the Rest of the World tally. In the case of a draw, the points are shared.
A close, high-scoring affair on the final day but George is just edged out, which means it's a rare wooden spoon for the Rest of the World. Dale and Tommy share the final bottle of champagne of the season, and Tommy equals his highest season score from 2010-11.
