Jelavic hot streak continues

Goals from Nikica Jelavic and Kevin Mirallas saw Everton complete their pre-season programme with a 2-1 friendly victory over Real Betis at Goodison Park.

Jelavic continued his fine build-up to the new Premier League campaign with an impressive first-half strike after good work by Mirallas to net his fourth goal of the summer. Mirallas doubled the tally in freak circumstances as Betis goalkeeper Stephan Andersen fumbled the Belgian's corner into the net just after the hour. Brian Rodriguez claimed a last-minute consolation for the Spanish side.

The downside for Everton and new manager Roberto Martinez was an injury to midfielder Darron Gibson, who limped off before half-time.

Everton were without midfielder Marouane Fellaini for the game. There has been speculation linking the Belgium international with a move to Manchester United in the past week but Martinez pointed out his absence was due to an infected cut in his leg.

The Spaniard told the club's official website: "Marouane would have been available if it was a competitive game. He picked up a cut on the US tour. Bearing in mind he has to join the Belgium squad now - and in two days the infection will clear - I didn't want to risk hurting him."

Martinez added that Gibson, who suffered a knee injury, will need to be assessed.

He said: "Darron is the only negative. We have been quite fortunate throughout pre-season not to pick up knocks and bruises, but in the warm-up he opened his knee slightly, so he's got a grade-one ligament problem.  We'll have a clearer idea of it in the next 48 hours."

The Toffees are at Norwich for their Premier League opener next Saturday.
