Goal-line technology unveiled

The Hawkeye goal-line technology system which will be used in the Premier League and at Wembley has been unveiled ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield game between Manchester United and Wigan.

The Premier League has already announced a deal with Hawk-Eye
Hawkeye will be used at all 20 Premier League grounds.

Referees will receive a signal via their watches and an ear-piece within the space of a second indicating whether the ball has crossed the line.

At an event held at the Emirates Stadium to unveil the system, FA general secretary Alex Horne underlined the importance of the technology.

He said: "This is one of the biggest changes that has happened in the 150 years since we conceived the laws of the game and it is fitting that it is happening in our 150th anniversary year.

"The object of the game is to put the ball into the goal and the system will help referees to make the correct decision.''

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore added: "It's a very exciting development in world football. It is a goal decision system - it is no longer just goal-line technology."

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
