Fletcher fearful of Wayne Rooney exit

Darren Fletcher has revealed his fear at the possibility of Wayne Rooney leaving Manchester United this summer.

Fletcher only started two Premier League matches last season
Fletcher believes United's title hopes will fade if Rooney leaves.

United confirmed on Monday that they had rejected a second bid by Chelsea to sign Rooney, but doubts remain over the striker's future at Old Trafford.

Fletcher suggested his side would struggle to defend their Premier League title if a player of Rooney's calibre were to leave the club.

"It's not the type of thing I have asked him. You do worry he might leave because he's a fantastic football player," Fletcher said. "But we will leave that sort of thing to Wayne and the club.

"Me personally, I hope he stays because he has been fantastic for Manchester United and a big part of all we have achieved in the last nine, 10 years since I have been in the squad. In that respect I hope he stays and we achieve more things together for United."

Fletcher also commented on United's links with Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas and insists the club's fans should not be worried by a lack of transfer activity, despite being linked with some of Europe's biggest names.

"[Cesc] is a fantastic player and Manchester United are always linked with great players," he added. "Whether that happens remains to be seen but it is part and parcel of being at this club.

"They are always going to attract and sign big players that are going to add to the fantastic squad we have already got.

"We're talking about the English champions so it can't be too much of a concern. We won the league last season. We should never have been knocked out of the Champions League - a bad refereeing decision cost us there.

"So if we don't sign anyone I fully believe we have the capabilities in the squad to achieve the success we want."
