Paul Gascoigne fined for railway assault

Former England international Paul Gascoigne has been fined £1,000 for being drunk and disorderly and assaulting a railway security guard.

Paul Gascoigne: Treatment was 'horrific'
Gascoigne has been fined £1,000.

Appearing before magistrates in Stevenage, Gascoigne was charged with two counts of assault, one of which related to ex-wife Sheryl Gascoigne. However, that charge was dropped as the ex-Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder admitted to attacking Jack Sherrington at the local railway station on July 4.

The court heard that Mr Sherrington had attempted to come to Gascoigne’s aid after he noticed him appearing to stagger towards the railway tracks. As staff tried to place 46-year-old into a wheelchair, he became abusive towards Mr Sherrington, the prosecutor Elaine McMillan explained.

Grabbed in the neck area, Mr Sherrington did not suffer any injuries. Regardless, the court ordered him to pay £100 as compensation to Mr Sherrington.

The player’s lawyer, Gavin Harris, refuted claims of intoxication, claiming Gascoigne had only consumed a small amount of alcohol due to a "combination of stress caused by worry for his father and acute pain from a hip operation six weeks previously".

Describing his client as “remorseful”, Harris publicly apologised in a statement read outside court. "He now wishes to be left alone to carry on with his recovery," Mr Harris added.
