Yaya: Pellegrini has made statement

Manchester City talisman Yaya Toure believes his club made a statement of intent with a quartet of high-profile signings in the opening weeks of the transfer window, backing new boss Manuel Pellegrini to blend them into a winning side.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is among those suggesting City are Premier League title favourites after spending close to £100 million to capture Fernandinho (from Shakhtar Donetsk), Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo (both Sevilla) and Stevan Jovetic (from Fiorentina), and now Toure has backed up that view.

While offering a note of praise for departed manager Roberto Mancini, Toure has clearly been impressed with the impact Pellegrini has made in his first few weeks at City, as he believes he is the man to take the club to the next level.

"This guy is called 'The Engineer' because he works so hard to build such good teams," said Toure of Pellegrini, in quotes appearing in several British newspapers.

"He is a fantastic manager and I hope he can lead us to some trophies this year. He is unbelievable. He comes with a great reputation and we are all working hard to try and deliver what he wants from us.

"Pellegrini is a very good choice as manager and I hope he will lead Manchester City to a lot of success. We have to adapt to new methods but it will be fine. Every manager has his own style. Mancini was fantastic, an amazing guy for us, and now we have a new manager who has a different style."

Toure went on to welcome the quartet of what he described as "unbelievable" signings, as he suggested the good times will roll against for the dethroned Premier League Champions next season.

"I’m glad all these players have come to the club because we need it and hope this season is going to be fine for us," added Toure.

"The club want to improve in every aspect and I hope this season is going to be good for us because we know we have a great challenge against Chelsea, Arsenal, United, Tottenham and Liverpool.

"This year is going to be tough for us but I hope with the squad we have and some good luck we get some trophies this year.

"The players are very focused now and we’ve seen that on the training ground. We’ve been very busy these last few weeks. We’ve been having two or three training sessions a day sometimes and we’re concentrating very hard.

"We want to win and we want to play well this year, but to do that we know we have to work hard. With the likes of Jose Mourinho going back to Chelsea, we know it’s going to be very hard this year."
