Saints out of Wanyama chase

The agent of Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama has ruled out any chance of the player joining Southampton as Cardiff City have reportedly joined the race for his signature.

Wanyama, 21, is expected to leave Celtic before the start of the new season after earning rave reviews for his performances in the Champions League as the Bhoys reached the knockout rounds.

But despite being linked with some of the Premier League's bigger clubs, it is the division's supposed lesser lights which have moved in to try and capture the Kenyan international.

Southampton had a fee in the region of £12.5 million accepted some weeks ago but talks stalled over personal terms - with his agent insisting that deal in now dead in the water. Widespread reports in the press on Monday suggested Premier League new boys Cardiff have now made a £10 million bid for the player, but that has been rejected.

Ivan Modia, Wanyama's agent, was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "It is completely untrue that we are holding talks with Southampton. They were made aware some weeks ago what the player was looking for.

"At that time they were not prepared to meet that so, as far as we are concerned, discussions with Southampton ended some weeks ago.

"The player is in Kenya and has no immediate plans for a quick return. The player will not be railroaded into a move that is not right for him."

Meanwhile, the Sun has claimed that Nodia and his fellow agent Rob Moore are demanding a £1 million payment to facilitate the transfer rather than the standard 5% (£600,000), and it is this which is preventing a deal from being agreed.
