Birmingham want Ferguson on loan

Birmingham City are understood to be keen to make a summer loan move for Newcastle's Shane Ferguson.

Ferguson first joined Birmingham on loan in February and scored his first competitive goal in the 4-0 win against Crystal Palace in late March. As financial issues continue to dog the club, manager Lee Clark is once again forced to work within a tight budget, meaning it is likely he will look to supplement his squad with affordable young players on loan.

A noted admirer of Ferguson following his brief spell on loan, Clark told the Evening Chronicle: "Fergie came in for us last season and was brilliant. He was great at left wing and left-back, he made goals and scored goals. He's a big part of what I am trying to do. I'm trying to turn the club around.

"With the financial situation, the young players I've got are important. I gave six Academy players their debuts this season. I have to change things around at Birmingham. I'm working in a restricted market as well.

"We fielded the youngest team in the club's history at one point. The starting XI was so young. But I am slowly starting to put my stamp on the team with the squad I've got. For us 2013 was a great year for us in terms of points. We were in the top-six form table from the turn of the year."

Meanwhile, the Chronicle is also reporting that the Midlands club hold an interest in Ferguson's team-mate Paul Dummett. With more than 15 players out of contract at St Andrew's, Clark is keen to add to his squad early in the summer. Dummett himself is a free agent from next month.
