FC Basel midfielder Cabral is edging closer toward a move to Sunderland, ESPN understands.
The 24-year-old defensive midfielder is out of contract with his current club at the end of June, and has been heavily linked with a Bosman transfer to Sunderland.
Speaking over the weekend, the player's agent Walter Fernandez told Swiss newspaper Blick: "He has signed a four-year contract [with Sunderland]."
Those claims were denied by officials at Sunderland, with sources close to the deal indicating to ESPN that the midfielder is currently completing the formalities of a four-year deal with the Black Cats.
A Swiss youth international, Cabral is the cousin of form Manchester City midfielder and current Swiss international Gelson Fernandes.
Joining Swiss champions Basel in 2007, Cabral - whose real name is Adilson Tavares Varela - originally hails from Cape Verde, and has made almost 100 appearances for his current club.
