Vermaelen to stay and fight for place

Thomas Vermaelen insists he is still happy at Arsenal and will battle to regain his place in the team.

Vermaelen lost his place in March

Vermaelen, 27, was named Arsenal captain last summer, but he endured a difficult campaign and lost his place in March as Arsene Wenger instead opted for Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

That has led to speculation the defender could move on this summer amid suggestions he could lose his place with the Belgian national team ahead of next year’s World Cup, but he insists he is not seeking an exit.

“I’m happy at Arsenal,” he was quoted as saying by Het Laatste Nieuws. “The only problem was that I did not play much and that did leave me frustrated, but things can change quickly. I suddenly found myself on the bench, but I can get myself back into the team again just as suddenly. I will work hard to do that.

“These things happen in professional football. Arsenal is a big club where there is a lot of competition. It’s not easy playing every game. I’m not losing sleep over it.”

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Swansea centre-back Ashley Williams, who could be sold this summer.
