Rekik joins Blackburn on loan

Blackburn Rovers have signed teenage defender Karim Rekik on loan from Manchester City for the rest of the season.

Rekik, 18, has made one appearance for the champions this season, making his Premier League debut at left-back in December's 1-0 win over Reading.

The Dutchman has been an unused substitute in five subsequent games but, with Vincent Kompany fit again after a calf injury and Kolo Toure back from the African Nations Cup, Roberto Mancini was prepared to allow him to leave the Etihad Stadium to get first-team football in the Championship.

Blackburn manager Michael Appleton said he was pleased to have secured the services of the City man, who he knows from his days as Portsmouth boss.

"I'm delighted to bring him here," he said. "He is a young player who I have worked with before at Portsmouth - we took him on loan there last season.

“He's 18 years of age, a Dutch youth international, and has great experience in terms of the football club he's playing at in Manchester City.

“He's a player who can play left-sided centre half or left-back, so he can provide us sufficient cover in those areas.

"The boy is full of quality. I'll put my neck on the line and say that the boy will be a Premier League player for many years. I'm sure he'll be a great asset and hopefully push us towards what hopefully would be a great end to the season.

The player said he was equally pleased with the move, taking to Twitter to write: "Happy to say that I'm going on loan to Blackburn Rovers and be part of the team. Hope to win many games and learn for my future at Man City."

Rekik is Rovers' fourth signing in a week after striker DJ Campbell was borrowed from Queens Park Rangers and out-of-contract midfielder Lee Williamson joined, while Tottenham winger David Bentley also joined the Lancashire club on loan on Friday.
