Boro boss Mowbray hails 'fabulous' Dyer

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray says new signing Kieron Dyer, released by QPR earlier this month, is “still a fabulous footballer”.

Kieron Dyer has managed just seven minutes on the pitch for QPR this season
Dyer will be reunited with Mowbray

Dyer, 34, is moving to the Riverside on a short-term deal and could play for Boro against his first club, Ipswich, at Portman Road on Saturday.

Mowbray told the club's official website: “It's a deal that suits both parties. Kieron and his advisors have been very, very honourable in the discussions.

“I'm happy he's here. He's a good lad and a good pro. He wants to play football and he's happy to be here - hopefully he can contribute and help us succeed.''

Mowbray and Dyer were colleagues as Ipswich as the midfielder was breaking into the first team, and the Boro boss added: “I've known Kieron a long time, and coached him for a year or two at Ipswich before he moved on.

“At such a young age, he was a fabulous footballer - and he's still a fabulous footballer.”

He said he was unfazed by Dyer’s record of injury problems - his QPR debut last season lasted only five minutes before he was carried off - but said: “I look at his record of where he has played this year.

“I watched him play against Manchester United this season and against Gareth Bale at Tottenham, and he was fine.

“We will have to see how he handles the intensity required in this league.''
