Schalke star Holtby joins Spurs
Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby will join Tottenham during the January transfer window, rather than at the end of the season after the two clubs agreed on a fee.
Holtby, 22, has already signed a five-year contract at White Hart Lane and was set to leave the Royal Blues on a free transfer in the summer.
However, with Spurs midfielder Sandro now ruled out for the rest of the season, the English club sought to push through a new agreement with the Bundesliga side and Spurs’ second offer, believed to be around €1.5 million, was accepted.
A statement on the Spurs website read: "We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Schalke for the immediate transfer of Lewis Holtby."
Horst Heldt, manager of Schalke, said: "We have found the best solution for all parties involved. Lewis had signalled that he was not reluctant to leave the club early and five months before the end of his contract FC Schalke 04 has received a decent transfer fee."
Schalke are now believed to be bringing in Lyon winger Michel Bastos, with the German club only prepared to make an offer once the Holtby deal is completed.
According to Bild, Bastos will undergo his medical at the club on Monday and sign a loan contract until 2014. Schalke will pay €1.85 million, with a further option to make the deal permanent at the end of both seasons.
