Martinez: Henriquez will improve at Wigan

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is confident he can help turn Manchester United striker Angelo Henriquez into the finished article - just as he did with Red Devils midfielder Tom Cleverley.

Henriquez, 18, is on the verge of completing a loan move to Wigan, with Martinez looking to bolster his attacking options for the second half of the season.

The Chile striker, who scored on his international debut last month but has yet to play a first-team game for the Premier League leaders, arrived from Universidad de Chile during the summer, with United believed to have beat a number of Europe's top clubs to his signature.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen for Henriquez to experience English top-flight football and Martinez believes a spell at the DW Stadium will improve upon his natural skills and prepare him for a fruitful career.

"Angelo is as good a goalscorer as you will find," said Martinez, quoted in the Daily Mirror. "He scored goals at Universidad de Chile and he is going to score goals here [in England]. I am sure he will be an important player for United.

"We are glad we can work with him and he can use Wigan as Tom Cleverley did and adapt to what is needed in this league."

After spending a season on loan with Wigan, Cleverley returned to United and has subsequently established himself as a valuable midfield option for both club and country.
