Lionel Messi out of Barcelona squad to face Malaga due to birth of third child

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi pulled out of the squad to face Malaga in La Liga on Saturday due to the birth of his third child.

Messi confirmed the arrival of Ciro on Instagram, publishing a photograph of the newborn holding his father's hand and revealing that everything had gone well.

"Welcome, Ciro!" Messi wrote. "Thanks to God, everything went perfectly. Mother and baby are doing really well. We are super happy."

Barca had announced that Messi had withdrawn from the game in Andalusia for "personal reasons" and it was later reported in the Catalan press that his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo, had given birth earlier in the day.

Messi and Antonella, who got married last summer in their native Rosario, already had two sons, Thiago, 5, and Mateo, 2.

Colombia defender Yerry Mina, a January signing from Palmeiras, replaces Messi, who will return for the midweek game against Chelsea.

Argentina international Messi has scored four goals in his last three league games for leaders Barca, who would go 11 points clear with victory at La Rosaleda.

Barcelona are due to face Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16 second leg on Wednesday with the game poised at 1-1.

Messi scored his 600th career goal in the 1-0 win against title rivals Atletico Madrid last Saturday.

That result put Barca, who are unbeaten in La Liga this campaign, eight points clear.

It also brought up 600 career goals for club and country -- 539 for Barca and 61 for Argentina -- in just his 747th appearance and took his tally for the season to 32 in all competitions.

The week before, he also set a new record for assists in La Liga when he set up Luis Suarez in the 6-1 win against Girona, registering his 148th top-flight assist and moving past former Real Madrid midfielder Michel (147).
