Barcelona's Paulinho: Jokes about ball keep-ups at unveiling didn't affect me

Paulinho says he wasn't affected by all the negative attention after his failed kick-ups at his Barcelona presentation last summer.

Paulinho's €40 million arrival at Barca from Guangzhou Evergrande raised questions among supporters after the sale of compatriot Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain.

Those doubts were magnified when a video from his presentation went viral after he dropped the ball while attempting some skills on the Camp Nou pitch.

"I saw the jokes on the internet, my friends were talking about them, but I don't give that sort of stuff too much importance," the midfielder told UOL Esporte.

"I just took it as a joke. I must have had 300 touches, but they only talk about the one when I dropped the ball. That has nothing to do with how a player plays. It's just ignorance speaking because in a presentation you do a little bit of everything."

Paulinho has quickly silenced the critics in Spain, though, and has played a key part in Ernesto Valverde's side's rise to the top of La Liga.

He has scored eight league goals this season -- two more than Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo -- has quickly settled into his new surroundings and has established a good relationship with Lionel Messi.

"Messi and [Luis] Suarez were the ones that helped me the most to adapt to the club, to Barcelona's way of playing," he added. "Whenever I had doubts, I spoke to them. I listen [to] and watch [Andres] Iniesta and Sergio Busquets a lot as well. I have a good relationship with them."

Paulinho, who is 30 in the summer, says he now wants to focus on staying at the club for as long as he can.

"I always tell my partner that I learn something new at Barca every day," he said. "I have a four-year deal here, until I'm 32 or 33. I want to take advantage of every year I have at Barcelona. I don't see any other place where I'd be better off."
