Denis Suarez: I rejected two offers to leave to fight for Barcelona chance

Denis Suarez turned down two offers to leave Barcelona in the summer because he was intent on remaining at the club and becoming a success.

Denis, 23, featured infrequently under Luis Enrique last season and was the subject of speculation throughout the transfer window as Barca looked to trim their squad.

Italian sides Napoli and Roma were reported to be among the clubs trying to sign the midfielder, who returned to the Camp Nou last year following spells with Sevilla and Villarreal.

"I had no doubts about staying," he told RAC1. "It's true there were two offers, but in no case did I think about leaving. I didn't want to move from here.

"I know I have the manager's faith and I believe in my chances. If I take advantage of my opportunities, my objective is to be an important player here and I won't stop fighting for that."

New Barca coach Ernesto Valverde has since given Denis time on the pitch and he has responded with two goals as the Catalan side have racked up seven wins in a row in all competitions.

"I think things are going better than last year," he added. "Not just in terms of concepts and how we've changed our way of playing, but training is different as well.

Denis Suarez was linked with a summer exit from Barcelona.

"Valverde has a completely different personality to Luis Enrique. He is a clear thinker and is relaxed, which he has transmitted to the players from the first day.

"We've started La Liga well and we're getting better all the time. It was unthinkable that we would be seven points clear [of Real Madrid in La Liga] after six games, but we have to focus on ourselves. The season's a long one and when you drop points, doubts can emerge.

"The dynamic is good, though, and not just in terms of results; I think the way we're playing is really good, too. It's been the perfect start to the season."

Denis' input from midfield has been matched by Paulinho, who has also scored two goals following a €40 million summer move from Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande which drew criticism.

"Paulinho's been unfairly criticised, above all because of the moment he arrived, which was just after Neymar left," Denis said. "But anyone who's seen the Brazil national team knows he's not a mediocre player.

"I don't think it was necessary for him to shut any mouths. He's proving the level he's at and the importance he can have on the team.

"He's a physical player who gives us a lot on a defensive level because he's so strong. Going forward he adds a lot, too, because he makes those runs into the box, as we saw against Getafe. And then he's an animal at set plays, he's incredible."
