Neymar says he's sure 'Messi will renew' following PSG fightback

Neymar has said his belief that Lionel Messi will extend his Barcelona contract in the coming months, following the club's historic 6-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16.

Messi's current terms expire in less than 18 months and in January he would be able to negotiate with other clubs with regards to leaving Camp Nou on a free transfer.

However, speaking after Barca completed a 6-5 aggregate win against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, Neymar backed his teammate to commit his future to the club.

"Messi will renew, for sure," said the Brazilian, who was in an exuberant mood after scoring twice as the Blaugrana became the first side to ever turn around a four-goal deficit in the Champions League.

"We had the game lost in Paris and here we played with responsibility, with joy, with pressure and with the ball. The first week after Paris was tough, it did a lot of damage, but then we recovered our football and since the second week we've been desperately waiting for the game to arrive and to write history."

Neymar and Luis Suarez were among the Barcelona players to extend their contracts last year and the delay for Messi, who turns 30 later this year, to follow suit has provoked some doubts.

However, amid continued Premier League interest, the club remain confident that he will stay in Barcelona.

"There are no nerves at all," president Josep Maria Bartomeu said in January. "I want to reassure everyone [about that]. I will handle the talks in person to ensure Messi stays here.

"Everything will be done with discretion. He's the best player in the world, we want him to stay here and we're working on that. We're talking with his people, we want him to stay here and he wants to stay.

"It is an essential renewal for the club. The sooner it's finalised, the better. We will do whatever it takes. All parties want to come to an agreement, so there has to be a happy ending. Hopefully he retires at the club."
