Barceelona defender Jeremy Mathieu suffers sprained ankle ligaments

Jeremy Mathieu's injury-stricken year continued as he was forced off during Barcelona's hard-fought 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

The French defender was removed in the 75th minute at the Vicente Calderon following a challenge from Atletico's Angel Correa, and Barca have since confirmed that he suffered sprained ankle ligaments.

However, with Javier Mascherano, Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal also currently sidelined, the Catalan club have not said how long Mathieu is expected to be out of action.

"First team player Jeremy Mathieu suffered sprained ankle ligaments in the win against Atletico," the club stated after the game. "His return will depend on how his injury heals."

Mathieu was part of a back three against Atletico as Luis Enrique changed his system in search of a reaction following a string of disappointing performances.

Alongside Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti, the 33-year-old was making his sixth start in succession in La Liga since returning from a calf injury in January.

But he is now set for another spell on the treatment table as he continues to suffer bad luck on the injury front.

Mathieu missed over two months with that calf problem, which he picked up in October, when he was initially only ruled out for a few weeks.

His run of injuries date back to the end of last season when he had a meniscus problem in his knee.

A knock to his calf then ruled him out of France's squad for the European Championship and he missed three weeks with a hamstring injury at the start of the current campaign.
