Barcelona fans express concerns over Lionel Messi's future in survey

Barcelona fans are not just increasingly worried about Lionel Messi's contract situation, but they are also concerned about life at the Camp Nou after the Argentina captain has gone, according to a survey of the club's registered members.

Messi's current deal expires in 2018 and despite recent doubts generated by comments from club directors Oscar Grau and Pere Gratacos -- which saw the latter removed from one of his positions at the club -- Barca remain confident he will commit his future until 2022.

Sporting director Robert Fernandez has said discussions are progressing well and president Josep Maria Bartomeu has reassured supporters that he will personally handle the negotiations.

However, some fans remain concerned about Messi's immediate future, as well as the club's long-term future without him.

In a bi-annual survey of the club's socios, 5.4 percent said that their main concern was Messi's contract situation.

Meanwhile, in a second question about the biggest challenge facing Barca in the future, 3.7 percent again referred to pushing through a new deal for Messi.

Another 2.1 percent said the biggest task for the Blaugrana in the future will be coming up with a plan to replace the 29-year-old.

Club spokesman Josep Vives, who revealed the results at a news conference on Monday, played down Messi's first appearance in the survey.

"In the previous survey [in June], Messi's contract renewal did not appear as a concern or a challenge for the future," he said.

"It's appeared this time because we have begun talks over Messi's new deal. But its position, whether first or sixth, does not mean it's more or less important [than the other concerns raised].

"I cannot add anything else about Messi other than there is a great confidence and calm inside the club [about his renewal], which will be dealt with discretion."

The main concern among the socios polled is the Espai Barca project (11 percent) -- which includes the upgrading of the Camp Nou -- and how the club will fund it.

Sporting results (10 percent), squad planning and signings (7.1 percent), court cases (6.7 percent) and economic viability (6.1 percent) all currently concern supporters more than Messi's situation, too.

Worries over court cases -- which include Messi's case with the tax office and the various cases surrounding the signing of Neymar -- have decreased significantly since June, when 22.8 percent listed it as their primary concern.

As for the biggest challenge facing the club in the future, 68 percent said the Espai Barca project ahead of maintaining sporting success and winning titles (21.2 percent).

In a separate question, 88.6 percent of socios also backed the club's new sponsorship deal with Japanese company Rakuten, who will replace Qatar Airways next season.
