Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez all back in Barcelona training after break

Barcelona forwards Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar were all back in training on Monday ahead of Thursday's Copa del Rey game against Athletic Bilbao.

The trio returned to the Catalan city earlier in the day from Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil respectively after being given an extended winter break by coach Luis Enrique.

All three were allowed to miss the last game of 2016 against Hercules and spent the New Year in South America, as did Javier Mascherano, while the rest of the squad returned to training last week.

Messi and Suarez -- with 12 goals each -- are the top scorers in Spain's top flight and the three forwards have scored 44 goals between them in all competitions so far this season.

Barca begin 2017 with difficult back-to-back away games. They face Athletic at San Mames in the first leg of their round-of-16 Copa del Rey tie, before travelling to high-flying Villarreal in the league on Sunday.

Luis Enrique must decide what part Messi, Suarez and Neymar play in the two games, given they've returned to training later than the rest of their teammates.

Jasper Cillessen, who's sidelined for two weeks with a calf problem, will miss the trip to Bilbao, but the Blaugrana should have everyone else available.

Jeremy Mathieu has been out of action since October, but he is back in training and is likely to be given the green light to return to action by the club's medics soon.

Barcelona have never won the first game of a calendar year under Luis Enrique, and so could be wary ahead of this week's trip to the Basque Country.

Two years ago they were infamously beaten by David Moyes' Real Sociedad at Anoeta, sparking a recovery which led to the Treble, and last year they were held to a goalless draw by local rivals Espanyol.

Three days after the Athletic game, Barca face fourth-placed Villarreal, against whom they can ill-afford to drop points while beginning the year three points behind Real Madrid and having played a game more.
