Luis Enrique: Lionel Messi contract renewal talks 'news I like'

Luis Enrique welcomed Jorge Messi's arrival in Barcelona to begin negotiating Lionel Messi's new contract, although he wouldn't be drawn on predicting the outcome of the talks.

Messi's current terms expire in 2018 and, following Neymar's extension and Luis Suarez's imminent renewal, the club are keen to tie him down to a deal which commits his long-term future to the club.

Despite reports last month that the Argentine international was considering running his contract down, Barca remain confident of extending his stay at Camp Nou and the arrival of his father, who is also his agent, in the Catalan city has been seen as good news.

"Absolutely, it's news that I like," Luis Enrique said in a news conference on Friday when questioned about Jorge Messi arriving in Barcelona.

"It's news I like because it would [mean] Leo would join the list of players that have renewed and who want to continue being part of the Barcelona family.

"The day that it's announced will be a day to celebrate for all the Barcelona family."

However, Luis Enrique didn't want to take a bet on Messi's future.

"No, I wouldn't dare," he answered when asked if he could make a prediction about whether Messi will definitely renew or not.

Messi's father arrived in Barcelona earlier this week with the objective of meeting with president Josep Maria Bartomeu to begin talks.

Diario Sport report that he has already touched base with Bartomeu on the phone but the next few days will serve to move negotiations along.

Barca felt it was key to confirm new deals for Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano, Neymar and Luis Suarez before advancing discussions with Messi to assure him that he'll continue to have excellent support in his quest for more titles.

With Suarez set to renew in the coming days, Mundo Deportivo claim everything is now in place on the sporting side of things to kick on with Messi.

Economically, the 29-year-old is tipped to become the highest paid player in the world once again.

Cristiano Ronaldo is thought to hold that title at the moment having renewed with Real Madrid in November, but Barca are expected to pay what it takes to keep hold of their record goalscorer.

Messi made his Barca debut in 2004 and played his 549th game for the club in Tuesday's 4-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach, becoming the club's joint fourth all-time appearance maker alongside Migueli but short of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Carles Puyol.

During that time he has signed eight professional contracts with the club.
