Barcelona star Neymar equals Champions League assist record

Barcelona forward Neymar equalled the record for Champions League assists in a single season during his team's 2-0 win at Celtic, according to Opta data.

Opta, which has records dating back to the 2003-04 season, confirmed Neymar's feat when the 24-year-old fed Lionel Messi in the box for the Argentina international to score in the 24th minute.

Neymar has provided seven assists in just five games in Europe, with four coming during Barca's 7-0 demolition of Celtic at the Camp Nou on Sept. 14.

The Brazil international has become the fourth player to have provided seven assists in a given season, with former Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez setting the record in the 2008-09 campaign.

Mesut Ozil and Zlatan Ibrahimovic also achieved those numbers with Real Madrid (2010-11) and Paris Saint-Germain (2012-13) respectively.

Neymar will miss Barca's last group game at home to Borussia Monchengladbach on Dec. 6 after picking up his third yellow card during Wednesday's match at Celtic Park.

Neymar's closest rivals in terms of Champions League assists this season are Borussia Dortmund's Ousmane Dembele, with five, and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, with four.
