Barcelona to light New York's Empire State Building in club colours

The Empire State Building will be lit up in Barcelona's colours this week to celebrate the Spanish champions' move into New York City.

Barca are set to open a new office on Park Avenue on Tuesday as they bid to increase their business in the American market following their success in the Asian market since the launch of their Hong Kong base two years ago.

A number of events are planned to welcome the club to New York, with both president Josep Maria Bartomeu and Ronaldinho present in the city to mark the occasion.

And a statement released by Barca on Monday revealed that the famous skyscraper will light in Blaugrana colours as a way of welcoming the club to its new American headquarters.

"The Empire State Building will be illuminated in the club's traditional colours which will be seen late Wednesday afternoon once the sun goes down," the statement read.

"First vice-president Jordi Cardoner and former player Ronaldinho will take part in the traditional act of turning on the lights and the skyscraper will light up the New York sky with the club's colours throughout the night."

Manel Arroyo, vice president of marketing and communications, will run the club's American office and he says many factors influenced the club's decision to move to the United States.

"The main objective of the office is, evidently, commercial, but we are a global reference for what we do as a club and, it is obvious that what we do at home, dealing with social aspects, development of youth, will also be a key part of this office," he told the club's official website.

"The United States is a country where sports marketing is a big industry and, here, as well as obtaining resources, we will certainly learn more and improve the management of our assets in this area."

New York's historic 21 Club restaurant also wore Barcelona's colours as the cast-iron lawn jockeys on the balcony were decked out in the shirt of the Catalan club.
