Thomas Vermaelen's loan move from Barcelona to Roma means the Catalan club could save millions in payments to his former club Arsenal, according to a report.
When Vermaelen joined Barca from Arsenal in summer 2014, vice-president Jordi Mestre said the deal included €10 million up front, €5 million in variables and €3.8 million more should the team win two Champions League trophies in the next five years.
The Belgium international played only 21 games in all competitions in the two seasons after his arrival as he struggled with muscle injuries, and Mundo Deportivo has said Barcelona will make a big saving by letting the 30-year-old go.
However, it did not specify how much of the money due for games played by Vermaelen had already been received by the Gunners.
The report said Barcelona's decision to allow Vermaelen, Alen Halilovic and right-back Douglas to move on would save them paying €13.6m in extras that would otherwise have been owed to the players' previous clubs.
The transfer that took Halilovic to the Camp Nou from Dinamo Zagreb included €10m in variables which the report added would now not be paid now following his move to Hamburg.
Douglas, meanwhile, has made only eight appearances in two seasons, meaning an extra payment related to his number of appearances is unlikely ever to have to be paid. However, he remains at Barcelona for now.
