Barcelona's Neymar admits 'this hasn't been my best season' despite title

Barcelona forward Neymar has said that despite the club winning the 2015-16 La Liga title, this has not been his best season.

The Catalan club were crowned La Liga champions for the 24th time after a Luis Suarez hat trick saw them to a 3-0 win at Granada on Saturday.

Barca finish the season on 91 points, one ahead of Real Madrid, whose 12-game winning streak in the run-in ultimately came too late to prevent the Catalans from retaining the title and collecting an eighth league trophy in 12 years. They face Sevilla on Sunday for the Copa del Rey crown.

The Brazil international said that while his numbers were not his best, the club's success was owed to teamwork. He showed a bit of that on Saturday, sliding the ball to Suarez so the Uruguay international could complete his hat trick.

"This hasn't been my best season," Neymar told Globo Esporte. "I always like to improve upon my own numbers and accomplishments, each day I want to do better. I am proud of the league title we have won, not just my own performance, but that of the entire team. I have to congratulate my teammates for all the hard work they have done this season. This title took a lot of sweat, it was difficult. But in the end we got our reward."

The victory means that April's alarming dip in form when Barca took just one point from four games, including the Clasico defeat at home to Madrid, will now be just a footnote to the season. Since then, Luis Enrique's side have scored 24 times without conceding across their final five games, as they regained and then kept their nerve when it was most important.

"We must give even more value to the league title we have won," Neymar said. "We cannot forget what has happened this season and we must keep it in mind for the next one. Of course, we want the Champions League title. Next season we will once again fight for it."

Neymar said the club are highly motivated to play for Sunday's Copa del Rey title, and added that the two titles would help take the sting out of losing in Champions League quarterfinals to Atletico Madrid.

"We always want to win titles and now we have a new final," he said: "We have already won one and this week we have the second one within reach. We are all happy and motivated to win the Copa del Rey after having won La Liga.

"It hurts to not be in the Champions League final, especially knowing that we could have made it. But these are things that happen and we must accept them. I congratulate both clubs for making it to the final. It shows how difficult La Liga is," he said.

Neymar said he was happy to help Suarez, whose 40 La Liga goals for the season ensured that the Uruguay star finished top of the scorers chart, four ahead of second-placed Cristiano Ronaldo.

The former Liverpool striker is the first player not called Cristiano or Lionel to take the Pichichi crown since Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan in 2008-09. He is also the only person aside from the superstar duo to ever score so many goals in one Primera Division campaign. He is also set to win this season's European Golden Shoe award.

"He is a great player, not just for scoring goals but also a playmaker. In addition to being a great teammate, he is also a great friend," Neymar said. "I am very happy for him. We must always try to help in the best way possible so that the Golden Boot is ours each season. The key to our success is how united the team are. When we help each other we are happy."

Neymar added that he is looking forward to the chance to help Brazil win an Olympic gold medal at home this summer and added that he is at peace with the decision to rest during Copa America and play in just one summer tournament

"I have been dreaming about playing in the Olympics since I was a kid. I know that all of Brazil is also dreaming about an Olympic medal. I also want one and will be fighting for that. I know that the fans have put their trust in me and I don't want to let them down," he said.

"I am not frustrated [about not playing in Copa America], how could I be frustrated to play in a tournament I have never won? Of course, I dreamed about being able to play in both tournaments, but I respect the decision that was taken."
