Luis Suarez not obessed with pichichi, but goals prize 'would be welcome'

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez said he was not "obsessed" with winning the La Liga pichichi top scorer prize, after his second four-goal haul in four days during Saturday evening's 6-0 stroll past Sporting Gijon at the Camp Nou.

Suarez followed his "poker" in Wednesday's 8-0 win at Deportivo La Coruna, by again netting four times -- including two penalties -- as a weakened Sporting side were easily overcome by Barca with the other goals coming from Lionel Messi's early header and Neymar's late penalty.

Eight goals in two games means the ex-Liverpool striker now has a career-best 53 across all competitions this season. Thirty-four of these have been in La Liga, moving him now three clear of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo atop both the domestic pichichi and European Golden Shoe top scorer races.

Suarez is now clear favourite to become the first player not called Messi or Ronaldo to win the pichichi since Diego Forlan in 2008-09, and the Uruguay international told Movistar Plus from the Camp Nou on Saturday night that although individual goal scoring awards were not his objective, he would quite like to win them.

"It is not my obsession nor my objective but, if I am top scorer, that would be welcome," Suarez said. "I am surprised [by two consecutive four-goal games]. It has never happened to me before. The only thing I want is to keep helping the team."

Suarez admitted that a relegation-threatened Sporting side had made it quite difficult for Barca during the first hour of the game.

"The first half was very difficult," he said. "We realised that we were not playing at the rhythm we wanted. The ball was not moving at the pace we like. We saw we were not playing a good game. Fortunately the second half was much better."

When Barca were toiling for long periods in the game it was Messi who got them going, Suarez accepted.

"[Messi] is the one who gets the team moving," he said. "He is always there, and this season he is being very important. He helps the other players a lot."

Neymar had a more difficult night, missing at least four clear chances before his late penalty just about beat Sporting keeper Ivan Cuellar to find the net.

"[Neymar] needs to pick up confidence, because he is an important player for us," Suarez said.
