Barcelona's patience key in defeat of Arsenal, says Luis Suarez

Barcelona goalscorer Luis Suarez said that patience had been key to his side eventually easing to a 3-1 win in Wednesday's Champions League last 16 second leg at home to Arsenal, a result which sent Luis Enrique's side through 5-1 on aggregate to the quarterfinals of the competition.

Arsenal had their chances to get back into the tie over the 90 minutes, but Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez could not take advantage and Arsene Wenger's men could only find the net once through Mohamed Elneny.

Barca's South American strike trio of Neymar, Suarez and Lionel Messi all showed much more quality and composure to take the opportunities presented to them and make sure that the blaugrana outfit remained on course for a historic back-to-back treble of Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey trophies.

The Uruguay international said on Spanish TV after the game that his team had known that if they waited long enough in the game they would be able to find gaps in the Arsenal defence.

"We knew the physical condition of Arsenal, who look to play on the counter-attack, and knew we must have patience," the ex-Liverpool forward said. "Plus they had the score, coming in 0-2 down. We were able to take advantage of playing at home where we were strong."

Suarez said that he was happy to have scored the goal which restored Barca's control of the tie -- although he could not be sure with which part of his foot he had smashed Dani Alves' cross into the net midway through the second half.

"We played a complete game," Suarez said. "They made it more difficult with the equaliser, and I was able to score the 2-1 and we could control the game. I don't know what [part of foot] I hit it with. The good thing is it went in."

Barca are unbeaten in 38 consecutive games in all competitions, but Suarez claimed that he and his teammates were always aware that they could easily be punished by any one bad game.

"Games must be played and this was a difficult night, when a game can get away from you," Suarez said. "You can always lose over 90 minutes."
