Luis Suarez: Barcelona proved title credentials in Las Palmas win

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez admitted his team had "suffered" but hung on to claim a valuable three points in a tight 2-1 win at Las Palmas on Saturday afternoon.

Suarez opened the scoring early from Jordi Alba's pass, but the relegation-threatened islanders replied quickly through a strike from ex-Real Madrid attacker Willian Jose.

The ex-Liverpool striker's strong run then led to Neymar making it 2-1 before half-time, with the second period then seeing a Barca defensive line missing the suspended Sergio Busquets and rested Gerard Pique just about hold on against regular pressure from the home team.

The final result stretches Barca's lead atop the La Liga table to nine points from second placed Atletico Madrid, and 10 to Real Madrid in third, although both teams from the Spanish capital can cut that gap with their games on Sunday.

Speaking to Canal Plus after the game, the Uruguay international said these were the type of hard-won victories which help teams win championships.

"To win trophies, you must suffer," Suarez said. "We have been suffering in games away from home. But at the end of the day we have the three points, so we are happy. These are the games that win you titles, so you must enjoy them too."

Suarez himself now has 41 goals in all competitions so far this season -- including 25 in La Liga, and 15 in his last nine appearances.

"[The goals are] important for team to keep picking up points, and to get the good result," he said when asked about such goal scoring form.

Barca's tough schedule now takes them to Arsenal in Tuesday's Champions League last 16 first leg -- the Blaugrana's 17th outing since this year's shortened winter break, during which they have stretched their unbeaten run to 32 games.

"We know we have a lot of games over these last six weeks," Suarez added. "But we players want to play, we want to compete, and we are happy with the wins."
