Luis Enrique defends Barcelona fringe players after Copa del Rey draw

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique declared himself happy with his players despite watching them play out a goalless draw with Segunda B side Villanovense.

Barca began their defence of the Copa del Rey crown with a drab draw in the first leg of this last-32 tie, but given that Luis Enrique had made a string of changes to field a young side, the coach had few complaints.

"I am happy with the team's performance," he said. "For a player it is not easy to play a game when you normally do not have too many minutes.

"Clearly, the more minutes you play the better is your rhythm but I have seen plenty of effort and I am satisfied."

Barca dominated possession -- 75 percent to 25 -- but of their 14 attempts at goal, only three were on target and Villanovense, currently in mid-table in Segunda B, looked just as likely to score on the counter-attack at the other end.

"Knowing they are not in the best situation in Segunda B, Villanovense made it a very good match," Luis Enrique added. "They competed well and caused us problems."

Before the match, Barca learned that Javier Mascherano had received a two-match ban following his red card for shouting abuse at an official during the weekend's win over Eibar.

The length of the ban is less than feared and means the Argentinian will be back in time for El Clasico against Real Madrid.

"I would have liked the least number of games possible as a sanction," the coach said. "I hope we do not repeat this sort of situation."
