Barcelona given 20 days to present documents for Neymar tax fraud trial

Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, and his predecessor Sandro Rosell have been given 20 days by Barcelona's High Court to present documents related to the controversial signing of Brazilian forward Neymar from Santos.

The court issued the timetable late on Monday via a ruling instructing the entity and its current and former presidents to present their written defence statements, Catalunya Radio reported.

Bartomeu remains a suspect in a magistrate's ongoing investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds to sign Neymar.

This latest ruling is the next step as Barcelona prepare for a trial over the alleged tax offences in the transfer case. Rosell also faces allegations of embezzlement in the €57.1 million deal.

Barcelona, which will be tried a legal entity if the case comes before the bench, Bartomeu and Rosell have 20 days in which to file their defence documentation.

The ruling came shortly after Bartomeu expressed his confidence that the case would be shelved after being passed over from the High Court in Madrid to the Barcelona High Court.

Earlier this year, a Spanish judge indicted Barcelona, Bartomeu and Rosell in a probe focusing on 2013 transfer from Santos. The club denied any wrongdoing and stated that all three are innocent.

Barca insisted they paid €57 million for Neymar but the judge suggested the real figure could be at least €83.3m. The lower figure meant Barcelona had a lower tax burden and the club paid €13.5m to the Spanish tax authority to cover any potential irregularities last year.

Barcelona won the Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey last season while returning a record €608 million profit.

FIFA imposed a one-year ban on Barcelona signing new players, through 2015, after concluding they violated rules regulating the transfer of underage players at their La Masia academy.
