Barcelona release five players amid reported fears over new transfer ban

Barcelona have released five youth players in a bid to adhere to the existing transfer ban and to avoid the possibility of receiving additional punishment from FIFA.

Barcelona were banned from making transfers until January 2016 by FIFA after "seriously" breaching rules regarding the signing of underage players.

The sanction was applied after an investigation and was related to the club's signing of 10 foreign players under the age of 18 between 2009 and 2013.

The investigation also found the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) guilty of improper conduct.

As a result Barca have had to take measures to guarantee that no further punishment is handed out.

A statement from Barcelona released on Monday read: "As a consequence of the ban imposed by FIFA in 2014, FC Barcelona has presented a request to regularise the situation of, amongst others, five players from the youth teams.

"The measure has been taken with regards to these players due to FIFA's position which, in their understanding, does not allow the players to train, play or live at the club's facilities. FC Barcelona did not renew the licences of the players so that it could not be interpreted that a FIFA rule was not being adhered to.

"As such, FC Barcelona has taken measures that it considers appropriate, respecting to the full the personal situations of each of those affected. The players have been kept informed at all times of the process that has led to the ending of their relationship with the club."

Barcelona have not revealed which youth players have been let go but, according to Spanish media, promising 16-year-old forward Patrice Sousia from Cameroon is among them.

Madrid-based newspapers Marca and AS reported on Wednesday that Barca have taken such measures as a tug of war continues between FIFA and the Catalan giants.

Marca claims FIFA was not happy that Barca found a way to make two signings this summer without breaching their ban.

Barca signed Aleix Vidal from Sevilla and Arda Turan from Atletico Madrid after the end of last season.

Neither player will be eligible to play for the Blaugrana until January 2016, when FIFA's ban expires.

AS alleges that Barca have taken this drastic measure because they are being investigated by FIFA and that the club fear that breaking the governing body's transfer regulations could see their punishment increased.

The newspaper also said: "FIFA has evidence that Barca have repeatedly breached the rules of transfer of underage players, more specifically article 19."

Under FIFA's rules, a player under the age of 18 can only be transferred if the player's parents have moved country; the move takes place within the European Union if a player is aged between 16 and 18; or the player's home is less than 50 kilometers from the national border being crossed.
