Barcelona to appeal yellow cards for Luis Suarez, Rakitic and Vermaelen

Barcelona's continuing battle with authority has seen the Catalan club appeal against all bookings received during Sunday's 1-0 La Liga win at Athletic Bilbao.

Barca came through a tight game with all three points thanks to Luis Suarez's volley early in the second half, with Suarez himself along with midfielder Ivan Rakitic and defender Thomas Vermaelen being shown yellow cards by referee Carlos del Cerro Grande.

The Blaugrana have taken the unusual step of appealing each of these decisions to the Madrid-based La Liga offices, with an official club statement claiming that they did not accept the reasoning behind all three calls contained in the official match report.

"Barcelona has decided to appeal the yellow cards shown by referee Carlos del Cerro Grande to Ivan Rakitic (43'), Thomas Vermaelen (63') and Luis Suárez (74') in Sunday's match against Athletic Club," the statement read. "The club considers the reasons outlined in the referee's report inadmissible and has therefore appealed to the Competition Committee."

Del Cerro Grande's account of the game at San Mames, published online by the Spanish federation, says both Suarez and Rakitic were booked for hitting opponents with a raised arm during an aerial challenge, while Vermaelen saw yellow for knocking over a rival in a battle for possession.

Barca are also currently deciding whether to appeal the four-match ban handed out to centre-back Gerard Pique, who was found guilty of insulting a linesman during last week's Spanish Super Cup second leg against Athletic, as his side were on the way to a 5-1 aggregate defeat.

According to AS, Barca's initial statement before the ban was handed out, which claimed Pique had not used the very strong terms alleged, was mistakenly sent to the La Liga authorities instead of the Spanish federation's disciplinary judge who oversees the Super Cup.

Pique missed Sunday's trip to San Mames, and his ban also covers La Liga games against Malaga (h), Atletico Madrid (a) and Levante (h). The defender himself has said in AS that he hopes an appeal is successful and he can return to action quickly.

"I am optimistic and I hope it gets reduced," he said. "Because it is difficult not being able to help the team."

After an opening weekend which saw more polemics around refereeing decisions, involving both Barca and Real Madrid, Pique batted back a question about whether he thought officials in La Liga had any biases.

"For Barcelona to win the league or not will not depend on the refereeing," he said. "The officials are 100 percent impartial."
