Manchester United will be treble contenders this season - Luis Enrique

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has backed Manchester United to be trophy contenders in Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup this season.

Speaking after their 3-1 friendly loss to Louis van Gaal's team in Santa Clara, California, on Saturday, the Barca boss said that his former mentor had the tactical nous to take Man United all the way to a treble in 2015-16.

"With a coach like Van Gaal and the kind of players they have," he said. "It is a team that are going for everything.

"In a year a lot of things can happen. We came off the back of a year without a trophy and we won the treble. United could do the same, it's a great club.

"I spoke to [Van Gaal] for five minutes. It was a pleasure. He is a great person and one of the best coaches that I ever had. I have great memories of him."

Luis Enrique told media after the friendly that he wasn't too perturbed by the loss, although was disappointed with his side's lack of composure in front of goal.

Barca forward Luis Suarez hit each post in the first half and had a goal ruled out for offside after the break.

"Hitting the woodwork is part of the game," Luis Enrique said. "Today we have not been as clinical as usual. Aside from hitting the post, we created plenty of chances.

"It was a shame that that the pitch was so dry. It hurt both teams."

La Masia graduate Sergi Roberto put in another promising shift in preseason for the Catalans, this time playing out of position in the backline. His boss was impressed by the performance and hinted that it could be role that the 23-year-old plays more in the future.

"Sergi Roberto at right back is another option," he said. "The more options we have the better. He looked good playing at full-back."

Marc Bartra backed up his manager's assessment of Roberto, and pushed for the youngster to keep working hard.

"Sergi is a versatile player who is fast and can play anywhere," he said.

"The important thing is to pick up pace, get minutes, and get in shape.

"We'll try to keep improving in all aspects -- preseasons are there to continue to improve and get better for the next game."
