Luis Suarez came to Barcelona to win, says Javier Mascherano

Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano hailed striker Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan's goal helped the Spanish club beat Juventus 3-1 in the Champions League final.

Suarez, 28, arrived from Liverpool for £75 million last summer and completed his first season at the Camp Nou by winning a Treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and Champions League.

The striker netted after Alvaro Morata had cancelled out Ivan Rakitic's fourth-minute opener, with Neymar sealing a third in the final minute, and Mascherano insists that winning trophies was the reason Suarez came to the club.

"Luis came here for this," the Argentinian told ITV Sport. "He's a great player with a positive mentality. He's a top player and a really good person, so I am really happy for him.

"In the season we had some difficult moments we had to pass, but we did it. We kept working and today we can celebrate."

Suarez himself admitted that the feeling of being crowned European champion was something that he has strived to achieve.

"[Winning the Champions League] is incredible, something I've only ever dreamed of," he said. "To win these tournaments you have to suffer, otherwise you won't succeed, and [on Saturday] we did that.

"[Juve] equalises after pressing a little more and had chances [to score], but we have players who make the difference, and they put us back ahead.

"We always wanted to better our objectives. La Liga became the Copa del Rey final and now we have the treble.

"Humility and our togetherness throughout the season [is the key to our success]. [On next season], there's always demand [to win trophies]."

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, meanwhile, paid tribute to Suarez but admitted he had harboured doubts about how well the striker would adapt following his move from Liverpool.

"When we thought about Luis Suarez and considered him we knew of his great quality and his tremendous scoring figures but of course we had doubts about whether he would adapt to a different team and a different way of play," he said.

"As it has turned out he has been one of the best players we have ever signed and it was a very good decision to put our trust in him. We paid a lot of money but he has shown he has tremendous hunger.''
