Gerard Pique: Barcelona improved after wins over Atletico Madrid

Gerard Pique says there is no one reason for Barcelona's turnaround in form since January which has seen them win La Liga and the Copa Del Rey, as well as reaching the Champions League final, but suggested wins over Atletico Madrid were crucial.

Barca's season appeared in chaos in January following a 1-0 La Liga defeat at David Moyes' Real Sociedad, with the relationship between superstar Lionel Messi and coach Luis Enrique reportedly troubled, sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta being sacked, and president Josep Maria Bartomeu pressured into calling elections at the Camp Nou.

That all seems a long time ago now, as Barca have lost just two games since and have already sealed the domestic Double. They are also huge favourites ahead of Saturday's Champions League showpiece against Juventus in Berlin.

Pique said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo that there had not been one key turning point, but the confidence picked up by beating Atletico Madrid in both Liga and Copa fixtures in January had set the team onto a roll.

"I do not believe it was a 'click' on one day, or one talk, or particular situation," Pique said. "But since Anoeta [Real Sociedad's ground] the games have passed, the team began to win them, to pick up confidence, picking up what the boss wanted.

"We beat Atletico Madrid, who last year we were not able to beat even once, and that gave us more confidence to keep moving forward. And as I always say, confidence in sport is vital.

"You can have all the talent in the world, but if you are not feeling good in your head, it is impossible for things to go for you. The team grew a lot in this, and that is why we are there now."

Pique said that the widely reported row between Messi and Luis Enrique at training before that Sociedad game was not such a big deal at the time, and should not be given big importance now.

"I saw it like one of the situations that often happen," he said. "Some [training ground incidents] get out, and some do not. There is no need to give it more importance than it has. A discussion like many that happen over the season between players, or between players and coaches.

"In the end there are many players who have been here many years. Who has never once argued with someone they know? It is a normal situation inside and outside this job. There's no need to go over it any more. It is true that, as it was the star and the coach, more was made of it than it merited."

The 28-year-old had his own off-pitch issues earlier in the season, with his relationship with Luis Enrique having also been questioned following incidents including the letting off of a stink-bomb on a team flight, his fiddling with his mobile phone during the Catalan Super Cup decider against Espanyol, and an early morning run-in with traffic police in central Barcelona.

"[The traffic incident] was not too important in itself, the important thing was the situation," Pique said. "It was like that, and I had to take it on. In that moment I focused in what I was able to do myself, to train harder, to play at the top level that I could, and it seems that has brought results."

Pique said nobody could have foreseen Barca's season would now be ending like this, with the potential to match the unique Treble won during Pep Guardiola's tenure in 2008-09.

"I would not have predicted it in January, but not at start of the season either," he said. "You never think you can reach the final, with a chance to win the Treble. It is something which has only been done once in the history of the club, in 2009, once in all of history by any Spanish club.

"A Treble is almost never won. So at the start of the season, you do not expect to win everything. You set out to have a good season, to try and win La Liga as that is the competition that gives you consistency, and from there if you can do well in the Copa and Champions League, it is welcome.

"But I do not believe that anybody expected, not in January nor at the start of the season, that we would be here."

Should Barca beat Juventus on Saturday it will be the club's fifth European Cup title. It will also be the fourth time the club have won the trophy since 2006, and Pique said it should act as a stepping stone to more success

"At this stage we have to go for the fifth, sixth, seventh..." he said "I believe we are players with a lot in front of us. You look at the three up front, and Messi is 27, [Luis] Suarez is 28 and Neymar is 23. That says everything.

"This team has a long way to go, and we must not stop. We must achieve all that is within our reach, and next year we will see what happens. But the objective will be the same, to win everything, and get the most out of this unique generation of players."
