Thomas Vermaelen ready for Barcelona debut after injury

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen could finally make his debut for the Catalan club in Wednesday's Champions League semifinal first leg at home to Bayern Munich.

Vermaelen joined Barca from Arsenal for £15 million last summer having passed a medical at the Camp Nou.

However, the Belgium international suffered a serious hamstring injury and he has only recently been given the medical all-clear to begin full training with his teammates.

An Achilles tendon problem for versatile Blaugrana defender Jeremy Mathieu has now opened up a spot in Barca's match squad for the huge clash with Pep Guardiola's Bayern, and it has been confirmed that Vermaelen has been called up for the first time by coach Luis Enrique.

"Luis Enrique has called up 18 players for the game against Bayern Munich this evening," the statement said.

"[Jordi] Masip, [Martin] Montoya, Douglas and Sergi Roberto are the players discarded, as well as [Jeremy] Mathieu, who has an Achilles heel problem. The list also features Thomas Vermaelen, who will be making his debut in a match day squad."
