Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen: La Liga backup role difficult to accept

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has said he is finding it difficult to accept his understudy role in La Liga, telling Express he wants to become "the undisputed No. 1."

Both ter Stegen and Claudio Bravo moved to the Camp Nou last summer following the departure of long-serving keeper Victor Valdes, but the 22-year-old German -- who suffered a back injury at the start of the season -- has served as backup to the more experienced Chile international in La Liga throughout the campaign.

Ter Stegen has been Barca coach Luis Enrique's first-choice in the Champions League and Copa del Rey, but he expressed frustration with his current situation.

"It's not easy being in a situation where I'm not currently the clear No. 1," he told the German newspaper. "I received a nice welcome, but it's not like someone rolls out the red carpet for you here.

"It would have been naive to believe that it's an easy job to become the undisputed No. 1 at Barcelona, but that's my target, and it's something I will tackle with all my ambition."

He added: "It is difficult for me to accept that I only sit on the bench in the league. I want to play more, of course."

Despite only making 15 appearances for Barcelona in his first season, the Germany under-21 keeper believes that he "made the right step" when leaving hometown club Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer.

Barca are currently two points clear at the top of La Liga, have reached the final of the Copa del Rey and are in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, where they will meet Paris Saint-Germain.

"That's why I joined this club," ter Stegen said. "I want to win titles. We've played a good season until now.

"We've reached the cup final, and naturally we want maximum success in the league and Champions League. We are number one in the La Liga standings right now, and in the Champions League I desperately want to advance to the next round."
