Lionel Messi: Barcelona's attitude changed since Real Sociedad loss

Lionel Messi has said that Barcelona's players are now "more motivated" since the 1-0 defeat at Real Sociedad on Jan. 4.

Messi and Barca coach Luis Enrique reportedly had a training-ground row before the loss at Anoeta in the side's first game of 2015. The Argentina captain missed training the day after the match, before fuelling speculation about his future at the club by saying he was not sure where he would be playing next season.

At that point, it seemed the turmoil could completely derail Barca's season and lead to Luis Enrique being sacked after just six months in the job. However, the team has bounced back superbly since then by winning their last 11 games in all competitions.

While many fans and pundits have put this turnaround down to a clearing of the air after hitting rock bottom in San Sebastian, Luis Enrique has maintained nothing big has changed and that such ups and downs always happen over the course of a season.

However, when asked about the issue by reporters at a commercial event, Messi said: "There was a change in the attitude of the team and the motivation.

"In the most recent games we have gone onto the pitch more motivated, to press and attack. The dressing room wanted to change the image of San Sebastian. That has been seen a lot."

Barca's run has seen the team move to within one point of Primera Division leaders Real Madrid and on the brink of the Copa del Rey final, as they prepare to return to Champions League action with a last-16 first leg at Manchester City on Tuesday.

And the Treble of the Primera Division title, Copa del Rey and Champions League is now the aim for the season, according to Messi.

"We want to win everything we are playing for," he said. "Sometimes you can, and sometimes not, but this year we are going for all the trophies. We want to enjoy ourselves and do great things. On a personal level, to keep going as up to now, and to help the group with everything possible to keep improving."

Messi warned, though, that it is important to remember that the team had won nothing yet this term.

"The change has been noticed a lot, but we have not yet achieved anything," he said. "We will try and keep this positive run going, and remain at this level. I am very happy at how things are going, and want to keep going like this."

Messi also praised Luis Enrique's tactical work this season, saying: "I believe we have two variants of play which are very different, and we can use the two.

"We can play on the counter, having such quick forwards and take advantage of spaces. And we can also play as Barca have always done. We have not lost the philosophy of playing with patience and combining."

The immediate concern now is for Barca to beat Malaga at the Camp Nou on Saturday afternoon -- a result which would, for 24 hours at least, return them to the top of the table for the first time since early-November.

"We must keep going the same way, always playing to win, and to go for the three points," Messi said.
