Selling 'happy' Lionel Messi not an option, says Barcelona president

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu says Lionel Messi's recent superb performances show he is happy at the Camp Nou and just focusing on winning trophies with his current club.

Recent weeks have brought much speculation about Messi's future, especially as the Argentine himself has regularly said that he was not sure where he would be playing next season, while often adding that ideally he would stay at Barcelona long-term.

An apparent fall-out with coach Luis Enrique after Barca's 1-0 defeat at David Moyes' Real Sociedad in early January helped fuel these rumours, while Messi also has reported long-standing issues with both the current Camp Nou board and the Spanish tax authorities.

The 27-year-old has appeared to put any problems to the side through recent games, with a man-of-the-match showing in the 3-1 win at home to Atletico Madrid followed by a hat trick in the 4-0 victory at Deportivo La Coruna last weekend -- his first La Liga goals away from the Camp Nou since October 2014.

Bartomeu told the programme 'La Porteria' on Barcelona TV that these displays were evidence that Messi was back at his best and happy where he is.

"We have to look at how [Messi] is now," Bartomeu said. "He is perfect in all senses. He has enormous motivation to win everything this year. I was with him, and he is happy. He is No.1 in the world, although others win the prizes.

"He is ambitious and wants to win. He is having a magnificent season. He is the leader and acts that way. We have Messi for many years, and I do not see any option to sell him, or any of his teammates. They should give Messi every Ballon d'Or, for how he is, and how he plays football."

Bartomeu also claimed that the reported falling-out between Luis Enrique and Messi had not taken place, while saying the club was currently very happy with the Asturian's work as coach.

"They denied everything that was said," he added. "We signed the coach hoping he would do well. He is integrating the pieces well, and possibly we have the best forward line in the world with Messi, [Luis] Suarez and Neymar.

"We know Luis Enrique very well, and we know how demanding he always is. The idea of play remains the same."
