Barcelona back Gerard Pique following argument with police

Barcelona have defended Gerard Pique after he had an angry verbal confrontation with police early on Monday morning.

Pique, 27, was with his brother when officers gave him a ticket after his car had been stopped in a restricted lane for 15 minutes.

According to AS, the Spain international then reacted by saying such phrases as: "You're an embarrassment," "your job makes me sick" and "the Guardia Urbana [police] is a f---ing disgrace."

Police have charged defender Pique with disrespecting two officers, but Barca vice-president Jordi Cardoner believes it is time to move on from the incident after the player apologised to the club.

"We can all make mistakes, but what I take from it is that he apologised" Cardoner is quoted as saying by La Vanguardia.

"We need to move on because it's something that's happened to a lot of us. The important thing is that he's said sorry."

Pique also received support from Barca teammate Jordi Alba, who told a news conference it was an incident in his "private life" and that "everyone makes mistakes, me included."

Alba went on to dismiss the possibility that the club should fine Pique for his behaviour, and said the matter had been blown out of proportion.

Pique apologised and said it would not happen again, although he also said he felt the incident had been overplayed.

He wrote on Twitter: "What I said has been exaggerated a lot, but in any case, I am sorry, I made a mistake and it will not happen again."

The former Manchester United player has reportedly been in hot water with Barcelona already this season after letting off a stink bomb on a club flight to Finland in August.
