Iniesta 'dreams' of Barcelona armband

Andres Iniesta says he would be honoured to be named Barcelona captain by new coach Luis Enrique.

- Tomas: Mathieu and overpriced addition
- Aspas: Suarez treated like a 'murderer'

Following Carles Puyol's retirement, the position of skipper is vacant at Camp Nou and Enrique has yet to announce who will replace him.

Xavi is favourite for the armband, but he has not officially committed his future to Barca amid speculation that he may move to America's MLS or the Middle East.

And if the veteran midfielder opts to continue his career elsewhere, his long-time teammate for club and country Iniesta is waiting in the wings to take on the captaincy of the Catalans.

"[Games captaining Barcelona] are moments that make you feel happy and proud," Iniesta told a news conference. "For people who have been at home here for a long time and have been part of the grassroots here, being captain of the first team has always been in your dreams.

"It's a step because it means you're still in the first team and you keep improving and you have the respect of your peers. The other part is that you're getting older. Everything has its positive and negative part.

"The truth is I am very happy to be in this group and to get ahead of Puyol and Xavi and Victor [Valdes], because to me they have always been references."

Even if Xavi stays at Camp Nou, it is likely that Iniesta would often find himself wearing the armband as his more senior teammate is expected to feature in the starting XI less frequently under Enrique.
