Barcelona, Real Madrid to play Women's Champions League quarterfinal at Camp Nou

The second leg of the UEFA Women's Champions League quarterfinal between Barcelona and Real Madrid will be played at Camp Nou on March 30, the Catalan club announced Monday.

It will be just the second competitive game the Barca women's team have played at the 100,000-seater stadium and the first with fans present.

They played local rivals Espanyol there in January 2021, winning 5-0, but that fixture was played behind closed doors due to COVID-19 restrictions in place in Spain at that time.

Barca usually play home games at the Johan Cruyff stadium at the club's out-of-city training base, but faced Espanyol at Camp Nou to mark the 50th anniversary of the last women's game played there.

On Dec. 25, 1970, a team known as Seleccio Ciutat Barcelona, who would eventually evolve into the existing Barca side, played out a goalless draw in a friendly against Unio Esportiva Centelle in front of 60,000 supporters.

Barca have never previously faced Real Madrid in the Champions League and the tie marks the next stage of a growing rivalry within the women's game in Spain.

Atletico Madrid are traditionally Barca's closest rivals but Real finished second behind the Blaugrana in the league last season, which was their first full campaign carrying the Real Madrid name after they absorbed CD Tacon in 2019.

Barca, meanwhile, have been the outstanding side in Spain and Europe over the last 18 months. They won the Treble last season, including a first-ever Champions League trophy, and have won all 16 games in the league this season and another six in Europe.

They face Madrid, who have risen to sixth in the league after a slow start to the season, in the Spanish capital in the first leg of the Champions League tie on March 22. That game is scheduled to take place at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium.

Before then, the two teams will meet next week in the semifinal of the Women's Supercopa at a neutral venue.
