Spanish third-division club Eldense quits season after 12-0 loss to Barca B

BARCELONA, Spain -- A third-division Spanish club won't play the rest of the season after a record-tying 12-0 defeat sealed their relegation.

Founded in 1921 in eastern Spain, Eldense said on Sunday they will provisionally cease all sporting activity and end their contract with a group of Italian investors, a day after their humiliation at Barcelona "B'' team.

The 12-0 loss equaled a record for Spain's third division. Extremadura thrashed Portuense by the same score in 1993.

Televised images from the match showed some of Barcelona's team consoling an Eldense player in tears after the final whistle.

Eldense have six matches left this season. It is unclear how they will be resolved.

Barcelona B lead their regional group of the third division.
