Following ankle surgery last week, United States international Aron Johannsson underwent a groin operation this past weekend, and the AZ Alkmaar forward is now expected to be out until at least the end of September, according to reports.

The Eredivisie club said on Monday that the 23-year-old will likely be out an additional six weeks, according to MLSSoccer.com. In addition to missing club action, Johannsson will also likley miss the U.S. national team friendly against the Czech Republic on Sept. 3 in Prague.

Johannsson had surgery on a groin injury back in 2012 and AZ press officer Daan Schippers said this current injury was similar to the one Johannsson suffered while playing with Danish side Aarhus in 2012, MLSSoccer.com reported, adding that the muscle had been causing Johannsson problems prior to U.S. World Cup camp.

"It was not found that he needed surgery until he was in rehab for his ankle," Schippers told MLSSoccer.com.

Johannsson is AZ's lead striker, with the Icelandic-American scoring 17 goals in the Eredivisie last season. He took the starting role after Jozy Altidore moved to Sunderland.
