Austria's Christian Fuchs retires from international football after Euro exit

Austria captain Christian Fuchs has announced his retirement from international football.

Leicester City defender Fuchs, 30, was unable to help Austria reach the knockout stages of Euro 2016.

Austria suffered a disappointing exit, failing to reproduce their impressive qualifying form as they finished bottom of Group F, behind Austria, Iceland and Portugal.

"The match against Iceland was my last one in red-white-red," Fuchs said in a video message posted on his Facebook page.

"I'm very proud of the 10 years I spent with the national team, I did everything with passion."

Fuchs, who made his international debut in 2006, earned 78 caps for Austria and scored one goal.

The left-back joined Leicester from Schalke last summer, helping the club to a first Premier League title triumph in May.
