Sydney FC opt against offering Filip Holosko new contract

Filip Holosko has parted ways with Sydney FC, squeezed out after the A-League champions decided not to offer the Slovakian winger a new contract.

Holosko's future has been up in the air since his $1 million-odd marquee spot was snapped up by Johnny Warren Medallist Milos Ninkovic and Brazilian striker Bobo was re-signed in the second slot outside the salary cap.

It was thought the 33-year-old might be offered a new, significantly reduced deal inside the cap to stay on for a third season, however Sky Blues coach Graham Arnold has opted for change.

Holosko, a popular player among teammates and fans, leaves after two seasons during which he scored 18 goals in 52 appearances and had moments of brilliance despite struggling in some others.

"It has been a great season and many thanks to my teammates who have been outstanding," Holosko said.

"Also a big thank you to all of the fantastic members and fans who have supported me and my family throughout my two years with the club.

"Winning the championship and the Premiers Plate was an incredibly special moment for me and my family."

Rumours have linked Holosko with Brisbane, though for now he has already returned to Europe and is understood to be mulling over offers from clubs based in Turkey, where he spent seven years playing for Besiktas.

He will not participate in Wednesday night's friendly against Liverpool

"Filip is one of the nicest people I have worked with in football and he has had a fantastic two seasons with Sydney FC," Arnold said.

"He is a great player and will be remembered fondly by everyone at Sydney FC not just for his football ability but also his character.

"I wish him well in his future endeavours."

The departure of both Holosko and MLS-bound Bernie Ibini has left a void on the right wing that Arnold will undoubtedly look to fill in the offseason.

The coach has flagged two or three new signings ahead of Sydney's A-League title defence and Asian Champions League campaign and will now have an extra visa slot to play with.
